I am a Japan-based performer and Kendama teacher and part-time translator.
I started learning to play Kendama and Boomerang paper plane in March 2020, and since then, I've fallen in love with how it makes me feel.
Today, in addition to Kendama and paper plane, I've recently started training in Spinning top.
My Kendama story
The date is 23rd March 2020. (It is my 31st birthday!)
I'm stuck at home during Lockdown...
I open TikTok. I see a video of a boy playing Kendama at a festival. He looks so connected with the music; the crowd is going wild; he's having the time of his life.
At the moment, I have to learn how to do that,
So I try my first YouTube Kendama tutorial. And so begins the best journey of my life...
In the last 36 months I've gone from complete beginner to semi-professional.
I've travelled all over Japan, played Kendama on stages, become a teacher on the platform whereI first learned, and met so many incredible new friends.
